About MaltaMalta is an archipelago situated in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea between Southern Europe and North Africa. It is located 80 kilometres south of Italy and 290 kilometres from the nearest point on the African coast. The total area is 316 square kilometres. The largest island is Malta and this is also the most industrial and commercial. Gozo and Comino are smaller islands and their main importance is that of a tourist resort. The other islands are small and uninhabited. The capital city of Malta is Valletta. It is also the seat of Government. Sliema and St Julians form a large commercial and entertainment conurbation. There are elegant residential areas spread all over Malta together with a large number of beaches and sea side resorts. The population of the Maltese islands is approximately 360,000. Malta has had a long history of emigration, but a reverse phenomenon of returning emigrants has been in evidence in the last years. Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. |
